ABout Me
Eleanor Bond
Grade 12
In art, I want to learn how to utilize colors and create abstract pieces instead of always following a reference. Something I'm good at is paying attention to detail and keeping my spaces organized. I'm also good at creating art in the dance and video form. An interesting fact about me is that I have performed at Disney World three times.

Composition
COllage
1. In the beginning, my plan was to create a realistic collage of a baby photo of me and incorporate different things that remind me of my childhood. I ended up scrapping this idea because it was taking too long and I couldn't find pictures that I wanted to include. Then, I decided I was going to create a collage of random things I think are cool. The composition of these piece draws your eye into the center picture of a woman, then you are drawn to the pops of red, and then start to notice the smaller details. I really like the idea of black and white with a pop of color so I wanted to incorporate that to catch your eye.
2.I really like how this came out and the vibe it gives off. It shows off beauty and growth because of the plants and butterflies coming out of the hands, but also has a creepy aspect due to the eyes and red color. One thing I meant to do that I would add is have the blood dripping out the puddle into another part of the collage so it fills up more space and makes the parts more connected. I think the piece is successful in looking cohesive and having a strong composition. 3. I didn't really have a hidden meaning in mind before I created this piece, but as I was creating it, an idea started to form. The piece includes some pleasant aspects such as the cat, the hands holding the moon, and the butterflies. There is also some parts that are more ominous such as the eyeballs and the inclusion of red on top of the black and white. My art can be interpreted as the good within the evil or the evil within the good. I feel like it represents my goal of being cool but creepy. 4. I really like this piece and I actually would hang it up in my room. I wish I could have also gone with my original idea because I feel like that would have had more meaning and composition behind it. However, I was struggling with that and in the end I created a piece with pictures I found interesting and pleasing to the eye. I am still very proud of the way this piece turned out and I may attempt to make the original baby picture collage again! |

SCratch Board Illustration
1. My piece depicts a magical forest with a dark twist. It has many textures and cartoonish style. Using scratchboard was difficult at first so I had to figure out how to start. Instead of working from the back forward, I started forward and went backwards. I had to keep going back to scratch off more so that there would be different values and so the piece didn't look flat. My piece has a symmetrical composition because of the tree in the center and trees on the side.
2. I think some parts came out really successful like the little girl, the danger sign, and the trees on the side. However, I think I should have planned ahead how light and how dark each part would because the center tree lacks dimension and sort of blends in with the background. It's hard to show values and dimension when you are only using black and white. I also don't love the way the leaves on the tree came out so next time I would find another technique to complete that.
3. I wanted my piece to tell a fantasy story with a creepy twist. By first looking at it, you see a magical forest with fairies. However, once you look closer, you see details such as the danger sign, the hand in the door, and the silhouette in the window. I wanted the story to be that the fairies make young children in the forest believe that the home is a magical and lovely place but in reality they are luring them into something much darker and creepier. I hope that this story is able to come across through my piece.
4. The more "cartoon" style usually isn't my thing and I've never used scratchboard before so I'm happy that it came out so well. I think my piece tells a story and has interesting details and textures. I really like this piece and am very proud of it.

Patrick Dougherty Sculpture Sketch
Altered BOOk
1. My piece portrays a building with columns inspired by the Ancient Greek temples. I wanted the color to be a tan that would match the Greek architecture. I wanted to add texture and color inside, so I cut a unique pattern on the floor and created a collage on the ceiling to represent the murals that are often painted in these buildings. The shape is a 3D representation of these temples.
2. I included many forms of media such as paint, collage, and other random items that allow it to come to life in a 3 dimensional way. I used straws to create the columns an cardboard to create the structure of the roof. I also used images from within the book to create a collage on the ceiling and a pattern on the floor because I wanted to include aspects of Greek culture. I think all of the elements of this piece come together to portray my vision.
3. My piece doesn't really have a deep meaning because it's a pretty literal interpretation of Greek temples. I did want it to look elegant and it shows the beautiful Greek architecture.
4. I feel like my piece is successful and valuable but I don't think it's my best work.

Gesture Drawings
1. I think that my 20 min drawing (last picture) is my most successful because I had more time and more practice and was able to shade and add detail.
2. The most challenging part of gesture drawing was deciding was getting the angles and proportions right. Also, with the time limit it went by really fast and I needed to decide which parts to prioritize.

Portrait project
1. My piece is a portrait of my mom and my reference was an old polaroid I found of her in the 90s. I wanted to use the lighting to my advantage to paint it to look like a real polaroid. That's why I left the outsides of the board white so it would create that look.
2. I think the way I blended the colors looks really nice. I added a lot of layers to the shirt and the hair so it looks very real and soft. I couple things I would change is the shape of the face and the paint on the chest. After looking back at it from afar, I realized that the shape of the head and the proportions of the face are just barely off. Also, for the chest I only had a thin layer of paint so you can slightly see the base layer underneath.
3. If I'm going to paint a portrait of someone I want it to be someone I really care about; so I chose my mom. I really love looking at old pictures of her and in this one she looked super pretty, so I wanted to portray that. I also did a pastel drawing of her in freshman year, so I thought it would be cool to see the progress I've made by doing another portrait of her.
4. I feel very proud of this piece. I've only done a few portraits in my life and I feel that this one was very well done considering it was in oil paints and I've never painted a portrait before. This is definitely one of my best paintings and I hope my mom likes it when I give it to her.
Oil Painting (unable to Finish)
1. I wanted to portray two girls that are connected but are also different. I have seen paintings like this before on Pinterest with an edgy style where the faces are melting together. I took inspiration from this and wanted to connect it to myself. On the right is a girl in blue tones who has a much more melancholy expression. The left side is not finished but it was going to be a girl with red/pink tones with a happier and more sly expression. I wanted to use different colors on each face and blend the colors together as the faces melt.
2. I really like the way the blue tones blended together and I think they all show a good range of values. The features such as the eyes, nose, and lips turned out surprisingly good because I usually don't paint in this style. One thing I would add or change is maybe to add blue values to the facial skin. I was originally going to keep the use of colors very limited and leave the skin blank to save time. I think it would look really cool to add colors into the skin but I'm apprehensive, as I've never really done this style before and I'm not using a references for the shadows and proportions.
3. My painting is meant to portray me and how I feel internally. A lot of times I feel like I have two personalities and I portray myself in a different way in front of certain people. Sometimes I want to come across as very cool and outgoing, and sometimes I feel like I have to hide parts of me that I don't want others to see; such as things I'm interested in or what I'm dealing with internally. I wanted to paint these two girls that are very different but are also connected, to represent the multiple personalities I feel that I have. The girls were supposed to be "self portraits", but they don't really look like me. In a way, I kind of like that because it goes alongside with the theme that I don't really know myself yet.
4. Like I said, I wasn't able to finish this piece in time but I am happy with the way it is progressing. I usually paint very realistic things using a reference, such as landscapes. I wanted to challenge myself and produce something more creative. I'm proud of the way it looks so far because, again, I'm not using a reference and I'm not used to this style. I'm apprehensive about adding even more paint to the skin, but I think if I continue to finish this painting it will still turn out good.
